Andrew Dale Public Service Initiative Scholarship in 2020 Gives Awards

SUFFERN NY - In the 2020 year we have been met with a ton of hardships.  From emotional, physical and financial hardships families faced because of the COVID 19 virus, students were greatly effected.  Many of the students at SUNY Rockland are paying their own tuition in order to continue their education.

Many of these students relied on financial aid and found great difficulties navigating the financial aid process remotely so many students applied for scholarships and were hopeful for any assistance that they would receive.

Andrew Dale of Suffern NY Increased Scholarships

Andrew Dale of Suffern NY has a scholarship for returning SUNY Rockland students that express a career track of public service.  This would include becoming a Police Officer, Firefighter, Paramedic, and other types of public service jobs.  It was decided that instead of one student receiving a $1750 scholarship, that three selected students would each receive a $1725 scholarship.

A total of $5175 worth of scholarships were handed out in 2020 to assist with the financial hardships that many of the students were facing this year.

Purpose of the Andrew Dale Public Service Initiative Scholarship

Andrew Dale is a former Police Officer and is a US Marine Corps veteran, who attended and graduated from SUNY Rockland and completed his education at Fordham University.  He became very involved with SUNY Rockland and sits on the Executive Board for the Alumni Association.

As Andrew Dale looked at the numbers of students attending verse graduating from SUNY Rockland he decided to create a scholarship to incentivize students to return after their freshman year and graduate.  The amount of the scholarship grew as tuition rates grew.  The goal was to be able to help with approximately 1/3 of the students yearly tuition.

The Andrew Dale Public Service Initiative Scholarship has been in existence for over 10 years and has assisted many students as they continued their education.

The three deserving students that received the Andrew Dale Public Service Initiative Scholarship were chosen because of their decision to enter into a public service career, however it was also based on the amount of volunteering that they had completed.  That volunteering in their community should be rewarded.
